Michael Fliri was born in Tubre (BZ), Italy, in 1978. After his diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 2006, he won a residency offered by the Austrian Ministry of Culture and moved to Vienna. He perfected his studies in Germany and Norway.
His latest solo shows have been 0O°°°oo°0Oo°O0 at Luigi Pecci’s Centre for Contemporary Art in Prato, Name and Getting too old to die young, Galleria Raffaella Cortese, Milan. His works were exhibited in many collective shows both in Italy and abroad: Languages and Experimentations, Young artists in a contemporary collection, MART Rovereto,Italian genius now - home sweet home at the Italian Pavillion, Shangai Expo, later shown in Taiwan, Wonder World. Expecting a restless future, special project for the Third Moscow Biennale, Strombeek Cultural Centre in Belgium, Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea, Monfalcone, Fondazione Stelline, Milan, Fondazione Merz, Turin, and Somerset House, London.
He works with diverse media, particularly video, performance and photography. Recurrent elements in his artworks are repetition, interruption (“natural limit that must be accepted”), disguise and dressing up: as animal, athlete, cinema or cartoon character, costumes are a very important part of his poetics. These masks represent for the artist the experience of another person’s existence and to open up new possibilities.
